To reduce the heavy financial burden that many seniors currently face, a new outpatient prescription drug benefit should be added to Medicare, the federal health insurance program for older persons and those with disabilities. This idea brief discusses the need for a prescription drug benefit for the elderly, who as a group are vulnerable to high drug prices and lower incomes, as well as several ways such a benefit could fit into the structure of the American health insurance system.
